Highly-rated Barnsley centre-back, Alfie Mawson, wants to leave the club and has handed in a transfer request at Oakwell, The Football Pyramid understands.

Mawson has continually been linked with a move away this summer, and as we reported yesterday, Wolves have emerged as front runners for the defender who has reportedly been subject of a £1million bid from Bristol City.

Mawson is also said to have attracted attention from more of the Championship’s ‘bigger’ clubs, with the likes of Newcastle, Queens Park Rangers and Leeds all previously linked with a move for the Londoner.

The 22-year-old has only been at the south Yorkshire club for one season, signing from Brentford last summer, and is little over a year into the three year deal he agreed upon arrival from the London outfit.

That first year proved a memorable one for Mawson, with the stylish defender playing a leading role in helping the Tykes to promotion through the League One Play-Offs, beating Millwall 3-1 in the Wembley final.

But despite helping Paul Heckingbottom’s side to a second tier return, the 22-year-old sees his future elsewhere, having, we are told, informed the club of his desire to leave.

With time to run on his deal, the Championship newcomers will be in a position to command a sizeable transfer fee – should interest from the Molineux club or another team progress that far for one of the most sought-after talents in the Football League.

The ball is now in Barnsley’s court and how they respond remains to be seen with the club sure to not want to lose a key player like Mawson.
