Championship promotion hopefuls Wolves are leading the chase to sign Barnsley’s highly-rated centre-back, Alfie Mawson, The Football Pyramid understands.

Mawson has been the subject of much interest from numerous clubs this summer, with Bristol City reportedly having seen a £1million bid rejected for the former Brentford player.

Newcastle, Queens Park Rangers and Leeds have also been linked with the 22-year-old, who is one of the Football League’s sought-after properties currently.

But Wolves, we understand, have emerged as front runners to sign the stylish centre-back, with the Molineux club looking to use their new found wealth following a takeover by Chinese group, Fosun International, to bolster their defensive ranks.

It is likely to take a sizeable amount to persuade the Yorkshire club to part ways with their key defender, who joined Barnsley on a three-year contract last summer and played a key role in helping the Tykes win promotion to the Championship in a memorable first season at Oakwell.

Wolves will certainly face competition from numerous clubs in their pursuit, but currently the Black Country club lead the way.
