Colchester United are set to sign former Aston Villa left-back Lewis Kinsella after he impressed during a period on trial, The Football Pyramid understands.

The tough-tackling defender, we understand, has attracted interest from a number of Football League sides, including Newport County, but it is the U’s who are set to secure Kinsella’s services.

Kinsella was released Villa at the end of their shambolic Premier League campaign in which they suffered relegation to Championship.

He departed without having made a first-team appearance, restricted to a handful of appearances on the bench only, alongside Under-21 football and a couple of loan spells away from Villa Park.

That included a brief spell at Luton at the end of the 2014/15 season, where the 21-year-old made three apperances, as well as time with then National League outfit, Kidderminster Harriers.

Kinsella featured more prominently for the non-league outfit, playing 13 times, but while there he was unable to prevent their relegation from the fifth tier – somewhat comically suffering two relegations on the same day with Villa and Kidderminster having their fortunes decided in sync.

Set to enjoy a new permanent home, Kinsella will hope for a year of better fortunes at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.
