League Two club Wycombe Wanderers are set to win the race to sign lower league cult hero striker, Adebayo Akinfenwa, The Football Pyramid understands.

The powerhouse striker is a free agent having left AFC Wimbledon after helping the club to promotion to League One, netting a penalty at Wembley which secured a 2-0 win over Plymouth.

The likable forward was subject of heavy interest from clubs in the football league and even abroad following his appeal for managers to “hit me up on Whatsapp” but it’s Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth who has won his signature, we understand.

Akinfenwa has enjoyed a long career in the lower leagues, featuring for 12 different football league clubs, including Gillingham, Swansea City and arguably the most impressive spells of his playing days at Northampton Town where he scored 71 goals in 168 games.

Most recently the 34-year-old spent two years with the Wombles, scoring 19 goals in 83 appearances for Neal Ardley’s side before his contract came to an end this summer.

Akinfenwa will hope for another productive season in the game as upon his imminent move to Adams Park.
