Relegated Premier League club Aston Villa are set to offer a new contract to young prospect Jerell Sellars, The Football Pyramid understands.
A mass exodus of the club’s current first-team and development squads is expected at Villa Park this summer following their relegation to the Championship.
But highly-rated Sellars, whose current contract expires this summer, is one player who will be offered fresh terms by the Midlands outfit, we understand.
The season has not yet finished for Villa, who sign off a disastrous campaign at Arsenal on Sunday, but they are taking no time in sorting their squad ahead of a first year in English football’s second tier since the 1986-87 season.
The Villains’ hierarchy are believed to have high hopes for the 20-year-old, who is yet to make his first-team bow at Villa Park and spent the final two months of the campaign on loan at League Two side Wycombe Wanderers.
Sellars made eight appearances for the Chairboys after joining in March, and though he didn’t hit the net during his time in Buckinghamshire, his technical ability and dribbling skill caught the eye at the Adams Park club.
The move provided a welcome experience in first-team environment for the talented youngster, who hit seven goals and claimed two assists in 17 appearances for Villa’s under-21 side before heading to the fourth tier team.
And that rich vein of form earlier this season will no doubt have factored into the decision Villa have made as they seek to tie down the diminutive attacker to a new contract.
Sellars will hope to build on a positive season with a strong pre-season on return to the Championship newcomers, and look to force his way into first-team plans as the club attempt an instant to return to the top stage.
